missing some important details
posted this review on December 25, 2013

After reading through the plan instructions.

I found measurements is off by one inch in both fore and aft.

16 feet boards will not reach from bow to transom, in otherword you'll either scarf and short piece of plank or get 18 feet long boards which is impossible to find in most areas..

John Gardner's " The Dory Book " is by far the best source for building any dories..

The instructions are so clear

Grand Banks Dory Plans’ instructions are very easy to follow. You will find similar guides on the internet, but I think this is the easiest to follow among all of them. I think that’s the reason why this gets such high ratings and positive reviews. My husband I have been working on our first Dory since we got this and we didn’t encounter any problems because the instructions are so clear.

My work came out great!

This is my first time to build a boat, and the final product is pretty impressive. I’m really happy with what I came up with. It’s just a simple boat I made using one of the designs from Grand Banks Dory Plans, but knowing that I made it by myself makes me feel really proud of it. My dad’s hobby is also woodworking and I’m just picking it up now. I’m still quite young and dad says it’s a good thing to start at a young age. I’ll be carving designs on my Dory boat too to personalize it for our boating trip next year.

Very detailed

My first shot at creating a Dory boat has been successful because of this guide. I just used my old tools in the garage, and came up with a real Dory boat! My wife and I used it boating on our vacation last month, and it’s just like the real thing. My buds couldn’t believe I made it. This guide is really detailed. The diagrams take you step-by-step. I’m completely new to this, but had no problems. I can’t compare it to other plans because I haven’t tried others before, but this is perfect enough for me, so I’m recommending it.

Neat plans

Neat plans! They’re detailed and easy to follow. There are so many boats to choose from with different sizes and uses. The pros and cons for choosing each boat is explained too so it’s perfect for boating newbies like myself. I’ve seen other plans and they cost too much apiece. This is just 78 bucks for multiple plans. The materials and tools needed are also simple, unlike others that make it appear more complicated than it actually is. Two thumbs up for these plans!

High quality plans

I’ve always been interested in woodworking, but I mostly built furniture and other stuff for the home. I didn’t consider working on a boat because we don’t live near the water, but before a vacation to my mom’s place, I decided to build a boat for the kids, and I got me this plan. It’s a clear plan with easy-to-follow instructions and really nice diagrams. You won’t have problems following the plans especially if you are like me who’s been into woodworking for quite a while. The plans are clearly of high quality. The best thing about them is that they don’t require expensive materials and tools. I was ok working on them with the tools I already had at home, the ones I use for other projects. For beginners, you might have to invest a little for your tools and of course the other stuff you need to build the boat. It’s not gonna cost much though, and after you get the initial tools ready, you can make as many boats as you want with a very small cost.

A must-have for beginners
Theus Langley (from Fincastle, USA) posted this review on October 29, 2012

I agree that this collection is a must-have for beginners. I’ve always wanted to get started with boat making but the guides and plans I see online make it seem more difficult than it is. It’s only when I found this collection that I realized how easy it is to make boats. And it’s true, you won’t need any special tools or materials to come up with your boats. You can easily find the tools needed in your shed if you’re already into woodworking, but if not, you can get them in hardware stores for cheaps. Even the materials are quite cheap. Plus, you won’t be wasting any because the plans are so easy to follow. I think the plans in here are being sold separated for higher prices by other websites, so be careful with that. Especially when buying individual plans. Here, you will really get your money’s worth because you get many plans for the price of one.

Clear instructions and detailed diagrams
posted this review on October 25, 2012

The plans here are very easy to understand, and the instructions and diagrams are superior to others. I’ve tried free plans too like most others, but they’re just too disappointing I didn’t even get started with them. As someone who’s just picked up the hobby recently, I needed something as detailed as this, so I won’t waste any time or materials. This is also quite cheap. I’ve seen others amounting to a few hundred dollars, and I’m not building a ship! With this one I get several plans for less than a hundred bucks, so it’s perfect.

Good plans for beginners
Timothy Scott (from Iota, USA) posted this review on September 27, 2012

I agree with the previous commenter saying that this is perfect for those who are new to boat making. I’m new to boat making and this is what I use. One of my friends who has been doing this for quite some time said the plans are good, but since he’s already in the advanced level he doesn’t need them anymore, so it might be a waste for those who are upper intermediate to advanced level boar makers. For those who are just deciding whether or not boat making is for them, I suggest trying it out. It’s  a fun hobby and these plans will make the learning process easier.

The best for newbies
Jason Wilbert (from High Point, USA) posted this review on August 12, 2012

If you’re new to boat making and you’re working on your own, I suggest using this instead of the free plans you will see online. At first they will seem the same, but once you get started, you’ll see the differences. Most free plans have incomplete instructions, and somewhere in the middle, you will be left to make decisions on your own. It’s hard to do that especially if you’re just on your first boat. When I was starting out, I tried working with free plans, but they were so difficult to work with that I ended up buying this. It’s such a waste almost starting from scratch again. When I used a plan from this collection, I finished my first boat in just a week. Also, I learned tips and tricks on getting supplies at bargain prices. If you’re new to boat making and you really want to enjoy it instead of getting a headache this is a must-have.

My dad loves these plans!
posted this review on July 4, 2012

I got my dad the plans, and he said they are awesome! He is always busy with his new project now, and he says we’d ride it together on my birthday. He has never built a boat before, but he is into fishing, so I thought he might want to try something new that goes well with his hobby, and I was right about that. The moment he saw the plans, he fell in love with them. I had them printed out and bound for him, so he can choose which ones to work on anytime he wants. My dad is more than 60 years old, and he can follow the plans pretty easily, so I think they are really good. He does get a bit of help from my husband from time to time, particularly when buying supplies, but most of the time he’s just happy to work on his own. I’ve checked out free plans online, and compared them with this, and they don’t even come close. I’d recommend this for everyone who wants to make their own boat.

Anyone can do this.

Last time I built something was when I was a kid and built a wagon. But I just put together the dory bottom and it actually looks like it is supposed too. I had to come right in and tell this. If I can do this, anyone can.
